I was thinking about the Mercedes S-coupe today and I wondered why the competitors of Mercedes don’t have a competitor for the S-coupe. I know that BMW has the Rolls-Royce Wraith and that Audi/VAG has the Bentley Continental but to consider an AMG product in the same breath as a Rolls Royce seems almost silly.

I think it would be interesting if someone else had a sporting luxury coupe and I vote for the Jaguar XJ.

And apparently I’m not alone on this idea either...

Given the money, I’d buy one over the S-coupe

There really should be an XJ coupe.

S65 especially definitely gets cross-shopped with Bentley and Rolls. The interior really is top notch and they’re perfect competitors.

But the 6-series is more of an E-class competitor. BMW’s competitor to the S coupe would probably be bringing back the 8-series.

Yeah. It’s a weird in-between spot. I would love it if BMW brought back the 8 Series, but I haven’t been the biggest fan of the 7 Series since the E38. I think Mercedes really has the luxury edge.

Personal Luxury Car - Historically, this was a class. There are very few examples remaining, mostly built by German manufacturers.

No knock to the S-coupe at all! It’s just the Wraith and Continental aren’t all that sporty and their starting prices far exceed that of the S-coupe. Only the S65 AMG approaches what the Bentley starts at and it’s still not coming close to the Wraith.

I know. But from what I’ve seen, people shopping that price bracket don’t really limit themselves on price so it doesn’t matter that some are considerably more expensive. And maybe that sportiness is part of the draw. I don’t know. What defines competitors up in segments like that can be very grey and confusing.
